Bio

Professor Martine Valois is a graduate of the Université de Montréal Faculty of Law (LL.B. 1996 and LL.D. 2010) and of Harvard University (LL.M. 1991) and has been a member of the Barreau du Québec since 1988.After debuting her career in private practice, Professor Valois carried on her profession in governmental administration until 2011, when she joined the ranks of Université de Montréal. She specialized in administrative law and has a particular interest in modern state institutions. She is also the author of L’indépendance judiciaire. La justice entre droit et gouvernement (Éditions Thémis/Schulthess, 2011). This publication was awarded the 2012 Walter Owen Prize by the Canadian Bar Association and was translated into English as Judicial Independence: Keeping Law at a Distance From Politics (Markham, Ontario: LexisNexis, 2013). This Prize rewards excellence in acknowledgement of excellence in legal writing and exceptional new contributions to Canadian legal doctrine. Professor Valois is also the co-author of a research report on the independence of administrative justice in Quebec, entitled: La justice administrative: entre indépendance et responsabilité, Jalons pour la création d'un régime commun des décideurs administratifs indépendants.

Martine Valois has furthermore acted as Principal Drafting Advisor to the Commission of Inquiry on the nomination process of judges in Québec. She regularly provides the media with commentary on the work of the Commission of Inquiry on the award and management of public contracts in the construction industry. She is a researcher at the Centre de droit des affaires et du commerce international (CDACI), academic advisor for The Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (CIAJ) since july 2013, editorial Advisor for the JurisClasseur administrative law ( LexisNexis ) since November 2012 and Academic Director, ATLAS Agora 2015.
